At least 11 people were killed as a result of Russian bombing today (19/05) in Kharkiv, northeastern Ukraine.
The ground offensive launched by the Russian army in Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine, after an escalation of air strikes, allowed it to record its biggest territorial gains since late 2022.
Initially, six people, including a pregnant woman, were killed, one person was reported missing and 27 others injured when an entertainment center in the Kharkiv region, Ukraine’s second-largest city, was bombed by missiles fired from the neighboring Russian Belgorod region, he said.
The Kharkiv Prosecutor’s Office explained that “among the wounded were a policeman and an ambulance driver who rushed to help people after the first attack,” accusing the Russians of resorting “again” to the deadly tactic of successive strikes.
Police said the same location was actually targeted 20 minutes after law enforcement and rescuers arrived.
Russia has repeatedly been accused of carrying out double strikes, bombing one part first and then a second time after first aid services arrived.
Kharkiv Governor Oleh Senkopov said that a short time later, five civilians were killed and nine others were injured as a result of several missiles being fired at the villages of Novosinov and Kivsarevka.
“They are terrorizing the population”
In this way, the Russian army seeks to “terrorize” the population, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded by requesting “two Patriot missiles for Kharkiv,” American anti-aircraft defense systems that “will radically change the situation.”
In 2022, Russian forces failed to occupy the Kharkiv region. But they recently opened a new front there with artillery fire and air strikes, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes.
Zelensky confirmed on Friday in an interview with Agence France-Presse that the enemy was able to advance five to ten kilometers along the northeastern border before the Ukrainians stopped him.
