2024 may change what we know about laptops

It is expected to be a year that begins with a special interest in the field laptops Which uses Windows as its operating system. This is because the American Qualcomm You may be able to change data regarding one of the most important issues for laptop users: its durability battery!

Qualcomm, for those who do not know, is one of the largest processor manufacturers in the world. In fact, they are so dominant in the smartphone space that almost all leading “smart” mobile phones – with the exception of the iPhone – use their own processors. With that in mind, expanding into the laptop space is a logical progression. The first attempt about 6 years ago was not particularly successful, but the new attempt with the Snapdragon X Elite “weapon” may have a different result.

Snapdragon X Elite is Qualcomm's new platform that was announced last October. It is a chipset based on a new central processing unit called Oryon, and according to the American company, the performance it provides is much better than the performance of processors from both Intel and AMD, the two companies that dominate the Windows laptop market. It also claims to be better than Apple's flagship chips.

But the most important thing is that the Snapdragon X Elite offers better performance while consuming a third of the power. Which practically means that a laptop based on this specific platform can operate without having to plug it in for at least 15-16 hours of use! Obviously, this in itself is a reason to get such a laptop.

Lower power consumption is expected since the Snapdragon Qualcomm has tried something similar in the past with chipsets like the Snapdragon 8cx that offered great autonomy but were disappointing in performance. It also requires “tweaks” from some applications. That's why Qualcomm halted this particular effort so quickly.

Now, the Snapdragon X Elite promises to deliver excellent performance and massive battery life. If this is indeed the case, it will be a very big change in the product category that we haven't seen much of in recent years. The question is to what extent there will be adequate support from computer manufacturers.

To date, relevant information is relatively limited. With CES (one of the world's largest digital product exhibitions) approaching, it is not known whether any of the big “names” (Lenovo, Dell, HP) intend to announce an elite Snapdragon We have not heard anything similar from companies like Samsung, which has extensive cooperation with Qualcomm in the field of smartphones. Only Microsoft is said to be ready to launch the next generation Surface next spring using Qualcomm's new chipset.

On the other hand, it is not unlikely that major PC manufacturers will consider that they must move more carefully with regard to exploiting the ARM architecture. After all, both AMD and Nvidia are said to be preparing ARM processors within the next two years. The issue is whether laptops will eventually follow the path of the ARM architecture and also whether Intel will take some radical steps that will put it ahead of the competition again.
