“I have spent 30 years researching what makes people, especially leaders, strong.
“Along the way, I discovered that you become mentally stronger by practicing six key traits,” says celebrity speaker and former Procter & Gamble CEO Scott Moats.
According to Mr. Mautz, these six characteristics of muscles as he describes them are:
Self confidence
power
Daring
decision making
Focus on the goal
Messages (relating to appearing positive and engaging)
According to Mr. Mautz, you can do easy exercises to enhance these qualities by being mindful of what you say to others — and to yourself.
In fact, if you say these six phrases to yourself or others on a regular basis, you are mentally stronger than most people:
1. I am able
It’s so easy to feel the opposite. It’s natural to get caught up in comparisons with others that make you feel inadequate.
We often think that our differences are an obstacle to our success, when in fact they can help us achieve it.
The only comparison you can make that is truly relevant is between who you are today and who you were yesterday.
The only question that really matters is whether or not you grow.
Mentally strong people remind themselves of this to boost their self-confidence.
2. What are the possibilities presented by this obstacle?
You exercise your strength muscles when you help yourself and others focus on the opportunities that arise in adversity, rather than the obstacles. This is the cornerstone of being mentally strong.
We tend to focus on what we’ve lost due to adversity—such as time, money, progress, confidence, our identity, or even our job.
Mentally strong people focus on what is in front of them, on the adversities and possibilities that present themselves now.
3. Do I allow myself to dream big?
Mentally strong people tend to think big. They give themselves permission to do so and encourage others to do the same.
It’s not as easy as it sounds. Most of us are swamped with our daily tasks, priorities, and distractions. Who has time to dream big? And we often convince ourselves: Great things happen to other people, not to people like me.
If you want to develop a strong, trained courage muscle, you have to allow yourself to try to dream. You have to believe that you are allowed to dream big, that big things can happen to people like you, and that making big plans and being bold will help you create a better, more complete version of yourself.
4. What is the cost of frequency?
Decisiveness is a trait of mentally strong people. They don’t dwell on what will happen if they make the wrong decision, nor are they paralyzed by fear of making the wrong decision. They remind themselves and others to be aware of what is happening while they delay making a decision.
A famous rock singer once said: If you choose not to make a decision, you still have a choice.
This is often a high-cost option. Your hesitation can mean that timelines and costs rise dramatically, draining resources as you pursue parallel paths.
5. Effective control check
Mental strength is closely linked to achievement. To achieve your goals, you need the muscle to focus on your goal.
You get sidetracked from your goal when you pay more attention to things you can’t control along the way. Doing a control check helps.
Create a simple table with two columns. Label the left column “Setbacks” and the right column “Solutions.” In the Setbacks field, list all the obstacles you are concerned about that might prevent you from achieving your goal.
Then circle potential obstacles that only you can control.
In the Coping column, list all the processes, procedures, and structures you can implement that will help you overcome the challenges you have identified and that you can do something about.
6. Should I do this?
This reprioritization will leave you feeling refreshed when your work duties are draining you.
For example, on days when I have to travel for work (travel itself is something I no longer enjoy), I stop myself from thinking, “Should I do this?” by telling myself that I have the opportunity to do this or that. I will: Soon I will be on stage giving a keynote speech and sharing ideas and inspiration that will help people.
This way I exercise my message muscles, another key component of mental strength. I remind myself of all the good things about being a speaker and writer, and I carry that positivity, energy and joy with me throughout the day, concludes Mr. Motz.
