In an imaginative way, the White House responded to new questions raised by journalists about President Joe Biden’s ability to run for a second term, given his advanced age.
In particular, the White House’s response to Joe Biden’s aging has been that “80 is the new 40.”
The 80-year-old Biden is already the oldest occupant of the White House in US history and plans to run for president again in 2024. He will be 82 when he begins his second term in January 2025 – if he wins.
Many opinion polls show that voters are concerned about Biden’s age as well as the age of his potential Republican rival, Donald Trump, who is 77 years old. A recent Ipsos-Reuters poll showed they would get the same percentage, 39 percent, if they competed in the 2024 elections. One in five voters said they were undecided.
Most Americans prefer a minimum age of 75 or younger for presidential candidates.
When asked about concerns that the president was too old to run for re-election, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre quipped: “80 is the new 40, don’t you know?”
He added: “In 2019, he received the same criticism, in 2020, the same thing, in 2022, the same thing, and every time he triumphs over his critics.”
