Comic-Con fans got a sneak peek at the new “Lord of the Rings” series “The Rings of Power” Friday in San Diego. Amazon Studios New Trailer Unveiled For the show, it’s set thousands of years before the events of J. R. R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings.” Stephen Colbert, a self-proclaimed Tolkien fan, was also on hand to calm a panel teasing the series on the fan convention’s biggest stage, Hall H.
Led by show makers and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power focuses on Tolkien’s second era of Middle-earth, when kingdoms form and fall, evil forces loom and threaten to cover the world in darkness.
The “Rings of Power” will transport audiences to fictional locations such as the Elven worlds of Lindon and Eregion, the Dwarven Khazad-dm Kingdom, the Southlands, the Northern Waste, the Sundering Seas, the Island Kingdom of Númenór and introduce them to a large group, including Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo) and High King Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker).
The eight-part series will premiere on Prime Video on September 2, with new episodes arriving weekly. It is said to be the most expensive ever made, with a budget of $465 million. Amazon bought the rights from Tolkien’s estate for $250 million in 2017.
Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salk told The Hollywood Reporter last year that while the number is a “crazy headline and fun to click on,” it “really builds the infrastructure for what will sustain the entire series” which she described as a “huge show.” to build the world.”
Salk also said that “a gigantic global audience needs to appear in front of him as date TV” but that they were “very confident that this would happen.”
This week’s fan convention starts at the San Diego Convention Center, in full force for the first time since 2019, with many studios spending big bucks promoting upcoming movies and TV shows. Comic-Con continues through Sunday.
