Will Smith posts video apologizing to Chris Rock for his Oscar slap
Smith posted a video To his verified Instagram account on Friday that began with the onscreen words, “It’s been a minute.”

“Over the past few months, I have been thinking a lot and working personally…” the statement read. “I asked so many fair questions that I wanted to take some time to answer them.”

Smith can then be heard sighing, stepping into the screen and addressing the camera as to why he didn’t apologize to Rock during his acceptance speech at the Academy Awards after he won Best Actor for his role in “King Richard.”

“It felt foggy at this point,” Smith says. “It’s all vague. I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that comes back is that he’s not ready to talk and when he is, he’ll get in touch with you. So I’m going to tell you Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior is unacceptable and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”

CNN has reached out to Rock representatives for comment.

Smith also apologizes to Rock’s mother, family and brother, Tony Rockwho had starred in the 2007 sitcom All of Us, created by Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

“We had a great relationship,” Smith says. “Tony Rock was my man and that probably can’t be fixed.”

Smith walked onto stage at the Academy Awards and slapped Chris Rock, who was presenting at the time, after he made a joke about Smith’s wife’s shaved head.

Pinkett Smith suffers from hair loss due to alopecia, an autoimmune condition that can lead to hair loss.

In his video, Smith also answers a question about whether his wife, after turning her eyes to a rock joke, asked him to do something at that moment by saying she didn’t.

He also apologizes to her, their children, and fellow Academy Award nominees for the position.

Smith says he has “spent the past three months re-presenting and understanding the nuances and intricacies of what happened in that moment”.

“I’m not going to try to unpack all of that now,” he says, “but I can tell all of you, there’s no part of me that thinks that’s the right way to act in that moment.” “No part of me thinks this is the best way to deal with feeling disrespected or insulted.”

Smith adds that it pains him to know that he did not stick to the image people had of him.

“Disappointing people is my central shock,” he says. “I hate when I let people down so I feel pain.”

Smith sends a message to his supporters, saying he is committed to “shining light, love, and joy into the world.”

He concludes, “If you stick around, I promise we’ll be able to be friends again.”
