Six illegal immigrants drowned near the coast of the Algerian capital, Algeria, after their boat sank Monday morning, while six others were rescued and several others were missing, local press reported.
According to the same sources, this tragedy occurred on Monday, August 8, at 4:00 am (3:00 GMT) near Paynem, west of the center of Algiers. The same source added that “six bodies were recovered and six wounded people, including a pregnant woman, were taken to Paynem Hospital.”
A search is underway by the Coast Guard and Civil Protection in order to find other missing illegal immigrants who were on the boat, according to the testimony of survivors. I
They were about twenty immigrants, of different nationalities, to travel on this makeshift boat in an attempt to reach the European continent.
To do this, immigrants usually rent a simple boat for about $2,000 per person. But this journey is always fraught with danger.
Monday’s tragedy off the coast of Algeria is another painful episode in the attempts of illegal Africans to cross the Mediterranean to reach the Spanish coast.
In order to combat this irregular migration, the Algerian government often arrests illegal immigrants off the coast or at the country’s borders.
