The shocking video was released days after it was shown privately to the Nichols family and their legal team, who likened the man’s beating to that of Rodney King at the hands of the LAPD in 1991.
Before the recording was released, Memphis Police Chief Sherrienne Davis called the incident “outrageous, cruel and inhumane” — but also urged the community not to resort to violence in response to the video.
Nichols, a 29-year-old FedEx worker and father of a young man, was driving home Jan. 7 after taking pictures of the sunset in a suburban park when he was pulled over on suspicion of reckless driving.
In their first statement after the incident, police said “there was a confrontation” between the officers and the driver of the vehicle — who was later identified as Nichols — who then fled on foot, according to Memphis police.
