Tel Aviv was set on fire by tens of thousands of citizens who demonstrated against Netanyahu’s decision to sack Israel’s defense minister.
Thousands of Israelis took to the streets late Sunday night (Photo, top, by The Associated Press/Oren Ziv) to protest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s sacking of the defense minister, who urged the government to halt a highly controversial plan to overhaul the justice system.

On Saturday Gallant became the most senior figure in Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party to say he would not support reform of the justice system, arguing that the protests, which include a growing number of reservists, are also affecting the regular forces and undermining national security.

He also called for an end to the protests and stressed that “major changes at the national level must be made through consultation and dialogue.”

“Right now, for the good of our country, I am willing to take any risk and pay any price,” Gallant said in his televised address.

Immediately after this development, the Israeli Consul General in New York announced that he had submitted his resignation in protest of the dismissal of the Minister of Defense.
