Moscow believes that Washington is behind the Kremlin attack
Russia today accused the United States of being behind what it described as a drone attack on the Kremlin with the aim of killing President Vladimir Putin.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated this at a news conference, saying Washington should bear in mind that Russia knows it is choosing targets and that Ukraine is simply carrying out US plans. He provided no evidence to support allegations of US involvement.
Ukraine denies any involvement
Ukraine denied any involvement in the incident early yesterday, as video showed two flying objects approaching the Kremlin, one of them exploding with a loud flash.
The Kremlin said it reserves the right to retaliate, but did not specify what form that response might take.
Peskov said Russia has many options and that the response, when it comes, will be carefully considered and weighed. He said an urgent investigation is already underway, but he could not say when its results will be announced.
What was reported by the Russian Foreign Ministry
The Russian Foreign Ministry said today that the alleged Ukrainian drone attack on the Moscow Kremlin “should not go unanswered” and shows that Kiev does not want to end the war on the Bank’s negotiations.
In a statement issued, the Russian Foreign Ministry spoke of an unprecedented wave of Ukrainian “sabotage” “terrorist activities” on Russian soil. “The terrorist and subversive activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are taking on an unprecedented scale,” the report said.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also condemned the West’s “silence” regarding the incident, and called on other countries and international organizations to condemn what Moscow described as a terrorist attempt to assassinate President Vladimir Putin.
“A terrorist attack”
Two drones targeted the Kremlin. “As a result of the timely actions of the military and special services, which used the military’s radar systems, the devices were neutralized,” RIA Novosti news agency quoted the Kremlin as saying.
Russian President Putin was not injured in the “terrorist act,” as Moscow described it. He also confirms that his work schedule has not changed and will continue as normal.
Indeed, in the videos circulating on social media, thick smoke can be seen above the Kremlin. Russia has imposed a no-fly zone in Moscow’s airspace and has installed anti-aircraft weapons systems as well as electronic countermeasures that could disable drones.
“Russia reserves the right to retaliate when and where it deems appropriate,” the Kremlin statement, reported by the Russian news agency Tass, added.
