The Mountain View, California company announced at Google I / O 2023 the first foldable smartphone, the Google Pixel Fold. According to the company, the hinge mechanism (fluid friction hinge) is the strongest that has been adapted to a device of this type with the Pixel Fold also being water resistant (IPX8). Its weight is 283 grams. While the battery with a capacity of 4821 mAh is enough for 24 hours of use (up to 72 hours of autonomy in low power mode).
Like the Pixel 7a, the Pixel Fold includes a Tensor G2 SoC in addition to the Titan M2 coprocessor to enhance the security of user data. The advanced “artificial intelligence” processor is accompanied by 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB or 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage, depending on the version.
The Pixel Fold contains a total of five cameras. An internal 8MP selfie camera (f:/2.0 with fixed focus, 84-degree FoV) sits at the top of the bezel of the 7.6-inch foldable OLED display with a resolution of 2,208 x 1,840 pixels.
Externally, the Pixel Fold has a 5.8-inch diagonal (2,092 x 1,080 pixels) OLED display, which supports a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. The external display supports up to 1,200 nits (HDR) brightness with a peak brightness of 1,550 nits and has a hole for the second camera for selfies. The camera is based on a 9.5MP sensor with phase detection and 1.22µm pixels. Like the other selfie camera, it is fixed focus and has an f: /2.2 aperture and 84° FoV.
On the other side (or back when it’s “folded”) it has a triple camera system consisting of a wide angle, ultra wide angle, and telephoto camera. The main camera is of 48 MP quad-PD type with OIS + CLAF (1/2 inch sensor) and has an f: /1.7 aperture with 82 ° FoV. The other two cameras are based on 10.8MP sensors but have different characteristics such as their lenses. The ultra-wide angle is based on a 1/3-inch sensor with 1.25µm pixels and a 121.1-degree FoV lens with f: /2.2 aperture. The telephoto lens system camera is based on a 1 / 3.1 “sensor with dual phase detection and a pixel size of 1.22 µm. The lens aperture is f: /3.05 and supports 5x optical zoom and 20x digital zoom (Super Res Zoom). The telephoto camera is supported by an LDAF (auto focus) sensor for laser detection) and optical and electronic image stabilization technologies as well as a spectrum and flash sensor.
Other than that, the device has spatial sound stereo speakers, three microphones with noise suppression, supports 5G networks, and has Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) at 2.4GHz + 5GHz + 6GHz, HE80 , MIMO, Bluetooth v5.2, NFC, Google Cast and GPS.
During the presentation, the company demonstrated smooth transitions of content from the external screen to the internal screen and vice versa as well as the multitasking capabilities of the latest version of Android by aligning windows/apps in different configurations. It’s available for pre-order in the US for $1,799 in the base version (shipments start next month) in two colors, Porcelain and Obsidian. Those who pre-order it receive a Pixel Watch as a gift.
