Panathinaikos now knows the six teams that its opponent will be eliminated from in the second qualifying round of the Champions League and which two scenarios will be placed among the strong in the third qualifying draw.
The Swiss championship moved on and the inevitable happened. Basel failed to come close to second place in the standings, were eliminated from the Champions League qualifiers and now Panathinaikos knows which countries their opponent in the second qualifying round will be knocked out of the non-champions path.
The Greens will find against them one of the three teams that will finish as runners-up in the Belgian Championship or one of the three teams that will finish as runners-up in the Ukrainian Championship.
Three plus three potential opponents
The “greens” will be placed in the underdogs of the second qualifying round, since the coefficient of 5.045 points is not enough for anything better.
The positive thing is that the second qualifier includes only four teams, that is, a couple, and now you know which countries will be among the strong and will offer him an opponent in the June 21 draw.
In Belgium, Antwerp and Union made the turnaround from the regular season and left Genk behind in the title play-offs. Bruges will finish fourth, so the championship is a case of three.
With two games remaining, Antwerp and Union have 45 points each and face each other next Sunday in a match that, if there is a winner, will potentially reveal the champion. Genk trail by three points and waiting for a draw to stay in the title race.
Basically everything will be decided by Sunday’s derby, because if there is a loser, they will battle Genk for second place, resulting in the same tie as Panathinaikos.
The picture is similar in Ukraine. Three teams are chasing the title with three matches remaining, but Shakhtar, with 66 points, and Dnipro, with 64, have increased chances compared to Zorya, who has 61.
As in Belgium, much is expected to be decided next Sunday, when the corresponding derby match is scheduled. Shakhtar faces Dnipro, and the winner gets a clear lead in the title, while the loser is expected to fight with Zorya for second place.
Teams that will make it strong in the third playoffs
The draw for the third qualifying round will take place before the matches of the second qualifying round, so Panathinaikos will also participate. For this to happen, the Greens will enter the draw with their opponent in the second qualifier, as a pair. The coefficient on this particular ball will be the strong coefficient, that is, the Belgian or Ukrainian team with which Panathinaikos will be selected.
Greece’s runner-up opponent in the second qualifier will also decide whether they will be among the strong or weak in the third qualifier draw.
- If the opponent is Shakhtar, then “Alfalfa” (as a pair with the Ukrainians) will be placed in the strong group, without any other conditions.
- If the opponent is Zorya or any team from Belgium, the second place in France must be taken by Lance and not by Marseille, so that the pair with “Alfalfa” has a higher coefficient and completes the group of four strong.
- If the opponent is Dnipro, the 8,000-point Ukrainians will send the pair to the underdogs
It should be noted that in the strong there are already Rangers and Braga, the runners-up of the Netherlands (either Eindhoven or Ajax) and in the weak Storm, the runners-up of Serbia (either Baka Topola or Kokaretsky), as a result it is very important that Panathinaikos be drawn with an opponent that will send it to the strong in this round.
Dates of interest to Panathinaikos
The Greek runners-up start their European journey from the second qualifying round of the Champions League, on the road to non-champions. Unlike the Greek champions, they are not in the Europa League groups, but one qualification would be enough to secure a European future until December.
If he passes the first hurdle, he advances to the third qualifier and faces the qualifiers, always on the tracks of the non-champions. If it does not advance from the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, it continues in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League and from there proceeds to the playoffs of either the Europa League (if qualified) or the European Conference League (if eliminated).
Panathinaikos will compete first on July 25-26, then August 1-2 (a draw on June 21), and if qualified, it will play the first match of the third qualifying round on August 8-9 and the second on the 15th. (Drawing on July 24). If the Greens make it to the playoffs (a tie for August 7), they will compete August 22-23 for the first time and August 29-30 for the second time for a group “ticket”.
As matches continue and domestic leagues draw to a close, the data will be clearer. Until then, the Sports 24 It provides a picture of what Panathinaikos can expect, without taking into account the possible rebalancing that will take place until the end of the season.
