Canada accuses India of involvement in a murder

The Canadian Prime Minister spoke of the country’s “violation of national sovereignty.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau fired back at the Indian government after the Sikh leader was killed last June.

After an emergency summons to Parliament, Trudeau said in his speech that there was “credible evidence” linking Indian government agents to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nigar, a Canadian citizen. Nijar was shot and killed outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18.

Trudeau said he raised his concerns about the matter “personally and directly” with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi when they met last week at the G20 summit in New Delhi. Shortly after the Canadian Prime Minister’s statements, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the expulsion of an Indian diplomat, the head of the Indian Embassy’s intelligence service, from the country.

“The involvement of any foreign government in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is an unacceptable violation of our national sovereignty,” Trudeau said, urging the Indian government to cooperate in resolving the issue.

Relations between the two countries have become tense in recent months after the killing of Al-Najjar and the protests that followed in Canada. Among other things, Ottawa suspended negotiations on a free trade agreement with China.

New Delhi accused the Canadian government of “turning a blind eye” to the actions of extreme Sikh nationalists who are promoting the creation of an independent state in northern India.
