Advances in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) are moving at a rapid pace as one technology giant after another is throwing their best products on the scene to gain market share and stay ahead of the curve.

After Microsoft saw huge success with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google, which has fallen behind the game, is now entering the market more aggressively. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has announced its next move on the AI ​​chessboard by integrating its chatbot, Bard, into apps like Gmail, Maps, Docs, and YouTube.

Google announced that the new features will allow users to search for flight information and routes on maps and watch related videos after speaking to Bard. Among other things, users can ask Bard to search their Google Drive files or provide a summary of the user’s Gmail inbox.

Microsoft vs. Google

This new move by Google comes on the heels of a move by Microsoft, which since March revealed plans to integrate ChatGPT into its Office suite of applications.

The latter has taken the lead in the race to develop artificial intelligence. Last year’s launch of ChatGPT, a chatbot from Microsoft-backed OpenAI, sparked a race in the tech industry from companies that now want to give consumers more access to technology. When ChatGPT was introduced, it was the fastest growing app for regular users, and is now one of the top 30 most visited websites in the world.

Google has been late in these efforts. In August, the app received 183 million visits, or 13% of what ChatGPT received, according to website analytics firm Sameweb cited by Reuters.

Google wants to put this technology also in Internet searches, where its share currently reaches 90%. Through the updates it will make to its systems, Google also said it is adding the ability for users to verify the answers it provides through the company’s search engine. Essentially, Bard seeks to alleviate one of the problems facing AI today: inaccurate responses known as “hallucinations.” Bard users will be able to see which parts of Bard’s answers they disagree with and which they agree with using Google search results. Also new is that users will be allowed to invite others to Bard conversations.

Google also said that any of the materials created by enterprise customers that Bard interacts with — such as company documents stored in the cloud — will not be visible to other people or used to show ads, according to Bloomberg.

With this release of Bard extensions, Google is also allowing users to import their data into the chatbot from the company’s other products. Google officials said Bard users will currently only be able to pull information from Google apps, but the company is also working with other companies to connect their apps to Bard. These AI applications have attracted the attention of authorities looking for ways to reduce risks to users.
