Prominent economist Giorgos Kouris – who wrote articles for ET and EleftherosTypos.gr – has died suddenly.

Giorgos Kouris, a prominent economist and Free Press columnist, died suddenly after his heart betrayed him.

George Kouris studied economics in Greece and continued his academic career with postgraduate degrees in the UK. He worked with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, while writing about energy issues for special issues of the Economist Intelligence Unit.

During the period of the ecumenical government (1989-1990) he was Director of the Economic Office of the then Prime Minister Xenophon Zolotas, while in 2004 during the government of Costas Karamanlis, he assumed the duties of Secretary General for Fiscal Policy. A position he held until 2009.

In the private sector, he previously served as an employee at Agora magazine, while successfully working as a consultant for energy projects around the world. He was known for his honesty and competence, and he confronted those who tried to implicate him in the structured bonds case, and won all the legal battles.

Recently, he has been constantly writing articles in “Elefthero Tipo” and Eleftherostypos.gr, intervening in economic and political issues.

Giorgos Alogoskovis posted on Facebook. “It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our close partner and friend Giorgos Kouris who has suddenly left us,” the former “tsar” of the economy of the New Democracy and government Karamanlis wrote specifically.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 12:30 noon from Red Mill Cemetery in Philadelphia.
