So it seemsAMD primarily leveraged the “Phoenix” and “Phoenix 2” silicon used in laptop CPUs for select desktop models.
According to the HKEPC website, the Ryzen 7 8700G and Ryzen 5 8600G models are based on the popular “Phoenix” die that includes eight Zen 4 cores and up to 12 RDNA 3 compute units while the Ryzen 5 8500G and Ryzen 3 8300G models are based on the popular “Phoenix” 2” die with the configuration Hybrid that includes Zen 4 and Zen 4c cores. HKEPC also claims that the Ryzen 3 8300G model will have one Zen 4 core and three Zen 4c cores.
The new APUs are expected to offer much higher performance compared to the previous generation, due to the move to the latest Zen 4 architecture core and the move from the older Vega architecture to the newer RDNA 3 architecture in terms of integrated graphics. Additionally, these APUs will also benefit from faster DDR5 memory (instead of DDR4), although we currently don’t know whether or not the XDNA AI accelerator will be enabled as well.
AMD Phoenix 2 dies
Previous generation Ryzen processors generally did not have integrated graphics. You would have to look to purchase a specific socket AM4 APU if you wanted to take advantage of the integrated graphics (such as the Ryzen 5 5600G or Ryzen 7 5700G). These models had a monolithic die and half the L3 of desktop processors with the standard Zen 2 or Zen 3 architecture, so they were not suitable for use by gamers or enthusiasts. Today, almost all Ryzen processors in the AM5 socket include graphics inside to “animate” the display. The Ryzen 8000G series APUs may still appeal to a number of users, and even some gamers, who want to create a compact desktop PC for light gaming.
Even Cyberpunk 2077 runs well on Phoenix when allowed to draw more than 50 watts
As Hot Hardware claims, when they tested the ASUS ROG Ally – which is based on the same silicon as the rumored Ryzen 7 8700G – they found that it reached the limits of its power and thermal performance only when it was plugged in. . So, if AMD allows the new Ryzen 8000G series APUs to “draw” 65W, we may be able to see impressive performance from the integrated RDNA 3 graphics with 12 compute units. But as HKEPC points out, we’re unlikely to find out before next year.
