Hell awaits the Ukrainians who crossed the Dnieper

Russian forces are shelling Ukrainian units that have crossed the Dnieper River to the Russian-controlled left (or eastern) bank of the river in Kherson, an official said on Wednesday.

Russian forces occupy the city of Kherson in southern Ukraine only partially, after Ukrainian forces succeeded in regaining part of the region. On Tuesday, Ukraine announced that its forces had barricaded themselves on the eastern bank of the river. This development may herald the beginning of advances in the Russian-controlled Crimean Peninsula, where Ukraine said on Wednesday that it had begun repelling Russian forces on its eastern bank.

While Ukraine’s recapture of the city of Kherson last November was a shocking defeat for the Kremlin, Russian forces on the opposite bank still control swaths of territory and bomb the towns and villages from which they withdrew.

Russian official, Vladimir Saldo, said in comments translated via Google on the Telegram application, that Ukrainian units were able to cross the river – confirming for the first time that this had happened.

“Additional forces have now been withdrawn,” he added, claiming that Ukrainian forces were surrounded in the village of Krynki, where a “fiery hell” awaited them. He added: “It is bombarded by bombs, missiles and ammunition from heavy flamethrower systems, artillery shells and drones.” [Ουκρανικές δυνάμεις]…In the last two or three days alone, the total enemy losses amounted to about one hundred fighters.”

Reactions to the new sanctions

Meanwhile, the Kremlin also reacted strongly to new EU sanctions. Maria Zakharova said that by announcing the sanctions, the European Union had become a “useful fool” for the United States, adding that the United States was using Europe to help its own policy goals. He added, according to reports, that the sanctions would have no effect and would harm the European Union.
