The platform has for years gained a bad reputation for transmitting low-quality multimedia material, even after an update in August that brought a “dose” of high-resolution to its compression algorithm, so this change is certainly welcome.
As we already mentioned, media files are not compressed at all. Instead, the update treats them as regular data files as you can see in the image below. When you send a photo or video, they don’t turn into chat window previews, but the recipient can click on them to see them. You’ll still be able to send multimedia the traditional way, if missing thumbnails in the chat window bothers you.
Since this change is not automatic, you must consciously decide to send an uncompressed image or video and click the “+” icon to move a document. Ki ra. WhatsApp says that this feature will be rolled out to its users gradually, so it may take a few weeks before it reaches each user individually. As for the Android system, the company is working to bring the feature to the Google platform, without a specific timetable at the present time.
2023 is shaping up to be a big year for Meta’s WhatsApp, as the messaging platform looks to experiment with all kinds of features. During the year we saw a native implementation of the service for Mac, with video calling capabilities for up to eight people, while a Windows version preceded it. WhatsApp is also testing AI-generated stickers and auto-deleted voice messages that bring back memories…an impossible mission.
