Apple: puts its hand in its pocket and compensates its users – the reason

Seven years after the Batterygate scandal, users are starting to see the money Apple has agreed to pay to settle the class action lawsuit.

In 2017, owners of older iPhone models started noticing performance issues on their phones after some iOS upgrades. Later that year, Apple admitted that it had limited the performance of older models. The company claimed that it took this measure so that older models would not stop working due to problems that the batteries might be exposed to.

The class action lawsuit alleged that by doing this — and without informing users — Apple was pushing users to buy the latest model rather than replace the battery in an iPhone they already owned.

Apple has never admitted that its goal was to force users to switch devices, but it eventually settled and agreed to pay between $310 million and $500 million depending on how many people joined the class action.

In order to be able to participate in the lawsuit, one had to submit their documents by October 2020. The necessary condition was that the owner of an iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus or SE be running a similar system. iOS in 2017 and noticed a drop in speed and performance.

The payout amount was previously estimated at around $65, but some users who received the money reported receiving $92.17 from Apple.
