RAF: Daniela Klett was captured after 30 years on the run

Police in Germany have arrested 65-year-old Daniela Klett, a third-generation member of the Red Army Faction (RAF), also known as the Bander-Meinhof organisation, after more than 30 years on the run.

The 65-year-old was one of three members of the RAF who managed to evade capture for decades. Authorities accuse Daniela Klett, along with her accomplices Burkhard Gerwig and Essent Föhler Staub, of attempted murder and a series of armed robberies between 1999 and 2016.

The prosecutor's office in Verden in Lower Saxony believes that the armed robberies were not politically motivated but were committed for financial reasons to finance their lives in chaos. According to the prosecutor's office, the 65-year-old was arrested in Berlin on Monday.

Daniela Klett is considered a suspect along with Burkhard Gerwig and Essent Föhler Staub, based on DNA analyses, in a series of armed robberies.

After the case was recently broadcast on television, investigators in Lower Saxony – where many of the burglaries took place – said they had received 161 clues about the possible whereabouts of the suspects.

Police and special armed units stormed the central train station in the western German city of Wuppertal earlier this month after receiving information that Ernst Volker Staub may have been seen on a train there. Initial suspicions about the man's identity have not been confirmed, authorities said.
