Elon Musk announced the xAI company he leads It will open source the Grok chatbot Within a week, just days after it filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing it of abandoning its original mission in favor of a for-profit model.
Musk has repeatedly warned of the dangers of technology being used for profit by giants like Google.
Earlier this month, it filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, which is backed by Microsoft. Musk was one of the company's founders in 2015, but left three years later. In response, OpenAI issued letters indicating that the Tesla CEO supports a plan to create a for-profit legal entity, and has even suggested that Tesla acquire OpenAI, which, as he said in one of his letters, would result in a company that would “cut money.” “.
Via X, previously Twitter, Musk announced that within the week Grok will become an open source app.
The move will allow anyone interested to try out the code behind the technology, with xAI following in the footsteps of Meta and France's Mistral, both of which have introduced open source AI models.
Google has also introduced an AI model, called Gemma, that can be customized by independent developers to meet their needs.
While an open source approach could accelerate innovations, experts have warned that open source AI models could be used by terrorists to create chemical weapons or even develop sentient superintelligence that may exist outside human control.
Speaking at a conference on the safe use of artificial intelligence in Britain in 2023, Musk said he wants an “independent arbiter” to oversee companies developing artificial intelligence models and sound the alarm if any concerns are raised.
Wanting to promote an alternative to OpenAI and Google, Musk founded xAI last year with the goal of creating what he called “the ultimate in truth-seeking AI.” In December, the company introduced Grok to Premium+ subscribers on the X plan.
Earlier in November, Musk said in a podcast episode hosted by Lex Friedman that he supports open source AI.
“The name is open [ανοιχτό] In open AI, it is supposed to mean open source, and was created as a non-profit project. “It is now closed source to maximize profit,” Musk said at the time.
