Degrees, experience, technical skills, and communication skills are just some of the skills we consider essential to creating the perfect resume. But there is something else – which not everyone has – that promises to make us in demand in the job market.
Technical skills in IT, software and data are in high demand and can earn you a great salary. But according to a LinkedIn expert, looking for a specific soft skill can be like studying…at a prestigious university.
Soft skills are equivalent to a degree from…Harvard University
Given the rapidly changing world of the job market, hiring managers are “looking for a growth mindset,” Anish Raman, vice president and workforce expert at LinkedIn, tells CNBC. “This is the new degree, as if you were looking for a Harvard degree.”
A growth mindset, coined by psychologist Carol Dweck, means that you can continue to improve your skills, talents and knowledge over time by learning through new experiences. The opposite is to have a fixed mindset – where you stay standing and don't improve.
Why is it so important?
Raman says the advice to prioritize continuous learning and development is especially important for today's young professionals, who may one day end up in professional roles that don't yet exist. For example, LinkedIn recently identified fast-growing jobs expected to rise in 2024 — including chief development officer and sustainability analyst — many of which did not exist 20 years ago.
It could give an advantage in the recruiting race
A growth mindset involves setting challenging goals for yourself, taking risks, and seeking feedback and guidance from others, Shekhina Bass, chief talent strategist at Goldman Sachs, told CNBC.
How you respond to feedback is especially important, he says: “Feedback can help you identify your blind spots so you can change the way you operate in certain work situations. With a growth mindset, you'll see those blind spots as things you have to improve.”
Having a growth mindset is essential for achieving goals, gaining skills, treating failures as learning opportunities, and developing positive changes in your life, according to research.
And it can give you an advantage in…the hiring race. To demonstrate a growth mindset in the interview, express your enthusiasm for learning on the job and emphasize working with your current manager to grow as a valuable team member.
