Since the beginning of the PS5 and Xbox Series Specifically, this trend was started by Take-Two with NBA 2K, Activision Blizzard with Call of Duty and PlayStation, and along the way even companies that seemed hesitant at first, like Microsoft and Ubisoft, followed it. Somehow, new AAA releases are now asking players in Europe to pay €79.99.
This increased price, which displeases many players, seems to be receiving criticism within the industry as well. Matthew Karsh, CEO of Saber Interactive, made a series of interesting statements. It is a big name in this field and employs more than 2,500 people. Saber serves as a developer, with over 20 development teams around the world, and as a publisher. It is responsible for games such as Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, Jurassic Park: Survival, World War Z, Evil Dead: The Game and SnowRunner.
Therefore, speaking to IGN, Karsh emphasized that his company wants to follow the path set by Helldivers 2. Saber wants to work in the area between AAA and indie games, the so-called “middle market.” However, the upcoming Space Marine 2 will cost $70, so that the title isn't associated with something worse.
Specifically, Kartch said, referring to today's gaming prices:
“I think as the cost of producing games goes up, the $70 games are going to disappear. I think… I don't think it's sustainable…
Look, you remember the hype for Cyberpunk, which I think eventually paid off, but when expectations are so high and so much money is spent on a title, the project is too risky for the company making it. And if you fail?
You remember what happened with Ubisoft a few years ago. Did all her titles slide during the year and she suddenly found herself in a completely different situation? It is difficult to recover from that.
I think the market will shift towards development that is not necessarily lower quality, but there will be a focus on trying to find ways to reduce costs.
