The new ROG Ally The refresh rate is up to 120 Hz with AMD FreeSync Premium support. In addition, it retains the same processor which is none other than the Ryzen Z1 Extreme with eight cores of the Zen 4 architecture and 16 threads thanks to the support of SMT (Simultaneous Multi-Threading) technology as well as the integrated “graphics card” (iGPU) of the RDNA3 architecture with 12 computing units ( CU).
Although the basic hardware elements remain the same, in the ROG Ally the original). ASUS engineers also added an M.2 Type-2280 slot that uses the PCIe 4.0 x4 standard, giving users significantly more upgrade options (even double-sided modules can be installed). However, the pre-installed M.2 NVMe PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD storage offers twice the capacity of the past (1TB vs. 500GB of the original ROG Ally).
We’ve also made changes to the cooling system, which the company’s engineers made sure to improve by replacing the fan with a smaller fan with more multiple turns and almost twice as many blades (77 compared to the previous 47), which is also less noisy. According to ASUS, ROG Ally
Perhaps the most significant change concerns the battery, whose capacity has been doubled to 80 Wh (from 40 Wh for the first ROG Ally). Instead of the XG Mobile eGPU slot, there’s now a USB® 4 Type-C slot with Thunderbolt® 4 and 40Gbps support, 100W USB-C PD (65W GaN charger included), DisplayPort™ 1.4 support and 4x PCIe lanes for eGPUs Individuality while the USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port that we knew from the first version was retained. There’s also a new SD memory card slot which we think has been improved – without the company admitting it. The speakers remain identical to the older model and so does wireless connectivity (Wi-Fi 6E 802.11ax Triple band 2×2 and Bluetooth® 5.2).
When visiting the ASUS booth at Computex 2024, we had the opportunity, despite the crowds, to get our hands on the portable gaming console and the first impression we got was positive. The knobs, triggers, levers and buttons look and feel a little better, while the cooling system seems to be drawing less air from the air vents (there was good air conditioning in the showroom, though, so we can’t jump to conclusions, too. Refer to levels the noise).
It should be noted that the dimensions have remained almost the same, with the new version of the console becoming slightly slimmer and thicker (28 x 11.4 x 3.7 cm versus 28 x 11.7 x 3.2 cm). The weight has also increased by 70 grams, now reaching 678 grams. The ROG Ally
