The new app is poised to compete with well-known password managers like 1Password and LastPass, which typically charge users a monthly fee to create unique passwords and store them securely, as well as sync them across different user devices. The Passwords app is expected to be unveiled during Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference, which starts on June 10, with the keynote scheduled to take place at 20:00 Greek time.
Apple currently offers the iCloud Keychain feature, which generates and stores unique passwords, and syncs them across all Apple devices a user owns, as well as Windows computers via a browser extension. However, the process of accessing and modifying these passwords stored in iCloud Keychain can be difficult because they are located within Settings, without easy access and without an optimized environment. Offering a dedicated password management app built into Apple devices will not only simplify this process, but will also provide users with an additional incentive to stay in the company’s ecosystem.
Like its competitors, the password app is expected to categorize passwords into different groups, such as accounts, WiFi networks, and passkeys. Additionally, the app will make it easier to enter passwords from competing apps and auto-fill them when the device detects an attempt to log in to a website or app. The passwords app will also be compatible with Apple’s $4,000 Vision Pro and will support two-factor authentication (2FA) codes, as it does with Google Authenticator and Authy. However, it’s still unclear whether the Passwords app will allow users to securely store files and photos alongside passwords, a feature offered by both 1Password and LastPass.
Besides introducing passwords, Apple is expected to unveil the latest versions of iOS, iPadOS, MacOS, WatchOS and VisionOS on Monday. These new versions of the company’s desktop and mobile platforms are expected to feature many artificial intelligence functions that the company will add.
