Areas where 40 people arrived in Victoria Square

Tensions that could turn into arrests broke out between settlers and police at the intersection of Derikini and Acharnon streets in central Athens on Friday afternoon.

After the incidents, 40 people were arrested and those arrested were taken to GADA. In front of the General Police Directorate of Athens, more than 200 supporters gathered from 21:30 pm in support of the arrested. The march was announced with the participation of several squatters after the water supply to residential plots in Notara 26, Exarchia was interrupted a few days ago.

The latest information talks about 34 arrests, however, this has not been confirmed by the authorities. Many protesters were reportedly injured.

What are the reasons for the march?

Occupy Notara’s report said several settlement liquidations took place within a few months.

In pre-march announcements, the marchers and their members cite “gentrification-gentrification” as the main reason for the police action in the hamlets, while the march broke up shortly after it started, which they say is to avoid tarnishing the country’s image for tourists.
