According to an investigation by WELT, members of the German federal government spent 531,000 euros to attend football matches in the context of the Euro 2024 tournament.
Chancellor Olaf Solz and several ministers used government planes to travel to host cities and back to Berlin, at a cost of €531,008.86, the Defence Ministry announced after an inquiry by the chairman of the Left parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Jerrin Bellmann.
“Anyone who burdens the state with costs of more than half a million euros for six supposed business trips is either completely irresponsible or completely out of place and time. Flying should not be an alternative travel option to an evening entertainment program by the federal government,” said Bellmann, who has criticised the government for dismantling Germany’s railways so that its members can choose to fly.
