The dire threat of water scarcity brings new legislation – what is ‘grey water’

Water shortages have appeared in recent months in our country, with many areas already facing problems due to both mild winters and the “rally” of high temperatures.

As the phenomenon of water scarcity is now a global and real problem, governments are taking measures to deal with undesirable developments and dire consequences.

As revealed by Real News newspaper, the Greek government is preparing a draft law expected to be submitted in October, according to which the merger of water supply companies in each regional unit is expected, while mandatory recycling of water. Larger hotels and businesses are considered.

Legislative intervention was deemed imperative as climate change makes natural renewal of water reserves less likely.

The goal of this bill is the water self-sufficiency of the land and land areas of Greece, while limiting the waste of drinking water and irrigation water.

According to the release, the arrangement to connect local municipal water supply and sewerage companies has been “locked in”. Planning plans to prepare an EIA for a regional unit with some exceptions. For example, EYDAP and EYATH are expected to absorb all remaining municipal entities operating within the administrative boundaries of Attica and Thessaloniki. However, the islands and some regions of Epirus and western Macedonia would be exceptions.
