On Monday (19/08) some parts of the country experienced rain and storms with intense electrical activity. 48 hours bad weather passed in our country and the weather changed from summer to winter.
The third-generation European weather satellite MTG-I1 has an instrument to record electrical discharges (lightning and lightning) in real time. The National Observatory of Athens processed and visualized the data with the aim of comprehensively monitoring meteorological phenomena.
Over 30,000 power outages before dark
It shows electrical discharges recorded from the beginning of the twenty-four-hour period until about 18:40. Accordingly, 31,828 evacuations were recorded, of which 3,906 were by land and 27,922 by sea.
Lightning in real time
With the Lightning and Storm Locator Network application, one can see where lightning strikes are being recorded in real-time.
Electrical discharges recorded in the last 20 minutes are shown in white. Power outages for the past two hours are shown in red. Electrical discharges are recorded by sensors located in Greece and neighboring countries. Each lightning strike is an electromagnetic wave with its own characteristics, which is recorded by sensors and whose position is precisely located by the time difference in reaching various stations.
