Parody is one of the most difficult forms of comedy. It can confuse and disorient the viewer if they are not familiar with the culture and traditions of the genre being parodied. But if they are, parody can make you laugh nonstop from the first minute to the last. Monty Python, Mel Brooks and films with Leslie Nielsen are the most common examples of this.
And if Mel Brooks’ most creative moments were in the early 90s, in his case the phrase “old art sieve” always applies. Because one of the most delightful parodies bearing his creative signature was released around that time. Perhaps over the years it has not remained as strong in the consciousness as the corresponding creations of the time like “Crazy Spheres”, but some of us know very well what a gem we are talking about.
Anyone even remotely familiar with the Robin Hood legend knows the basic story behind the parody in question, which has a Greek title: “Heroes in Leggings.” Robin is a daring hero who wanders the forest with his group as a defender of the common people. His archenemy is the evil Sheriff of Rottingham and his only love is the Maid Marian. To win Marian’s heart and hand, Robin must defeat the Sheriff and his master, Prince John. Okay, that’s the basic plot, but let’s not pay too much attention to it: plots are a buzzword in this kind of comedy.
The associations with one of Monty Python’s most famous works are tenuous. While it’s hard to consider Brooks’ film on the same level as the latter’s “Holy Grail,” there are moments in “Heroes in Leggings” that the British comedy troupe would be proud of. Perhaps the highlight is the introduction of the film’s “Men in Tights” musical number, which bears an uncanny resemblance to the Pythons’ “Lumberjack Song.”
At that time, the legendary film “Robin of the Woods” with Kevin Costner was also released, the most typical film of this legend for the generation that grew up watching cinema in the nineties, and Brooks’ comedy was the perfect accompaniment. We remembered it since it appeared these days on Netflix and said let’s see it again…
