US Elections: Kamala Harris Closes Gap With Trump on Economic Front Too

Donald Trump’s lead over Kamala Harris on the economy and crime appears to be narrowing among U.S. voters, a sign that the vice president’s campaign is gaining new momentum ahead of the Nov. 5 election, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.

When it comes to cracking down on crime and corruption, Harris and Trump are tied at 40%.

The poll, conducted Aug. 23-25, showed 43 percent of registered voters favoring Trump’s approach to the economy and immigration. Forty percent chose Harris’s policy. The three-point margin is too small to be considered significant, given that the poll’s margin of error is plus/minus 4 points. A previous Reuters/Ipsos poll in late July showed Trump leading by 11 points on the economy.

When it comes to cracking down on crime and corruption, Harris and Trump are tied at 40%. In a July poll, Trump was considered the best on this front, by 5 points.

precedence

Recent national polls show Harris with a slight lead over Trump after she entered the race on July 21, following President Joe Biden’s decision to retire and not seek a second term. The Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Harris’s share has risen by one point to 43 percent.

It remains to be seen how independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy’s decision to drop out and endorse Donald Trump will affect the campaign. In a July poll, about 8 percent of voters said they would support Kennedy.

Trump has frequently criticized the Biden administration in his speeches for its handling of the economy, where families are still feeling the effects of high inflation. The new poll shows that the issue most worrying registered voters is the economy (26%), followed by political extremism and threats to democracy (22%) and immigration (13%).
