2022 NCAA Division 1 Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships
The California Golden Bears reclaimed the NCAA Division I men’s swimming and diving championships from their arch rival, the Texas Longhorns, 487.5 to 436.5
Cal and Texas have now alternated team titles in each of the last three championships, with Cal winning in 2019 and 2022, and Texas winning last year.
This year, it was a close fight again, but the Bears went ahead after 200 and ended up winning by 51 points.
The Bears started relatively slow, finishing third in the 200 medley and fourth in the 800 free on Wednesday night, then failing to get anyone into the 500 free final.
But they took it from there, taking second place in the 200 IM (Destin Lascaux), 50 free (Bjorn Seliger) and 200 free relays. In that last event, Seliger led at 18.27, making him the fastest man to change his name Caleb Dressel in that event.
They didn’t have as many finalists on Friday, but they still swayed, like Hugo Gonzalez They broke the US Open record in the 400-mile race, closing the session by winning the 400 medley despite swimming the next inning.
The Bears took care of work on Saturday morning, and while the Longhorns were still driving on Saturday afternoon 1650, it was essentially over by that point. Cal advanced after scoring 53 points in the 200 defense led by the champion Destin Lascaux. While this was their last title, they swam hard through the night, eventually winning by over 50 points.
This is now Cal’s men’s seventh NCAA title and fifth under the coach Dave Dorden. The Bears have not finished below fourth in the NCAAs since Durden took the helm during the 2007-08 season, finishing in the top two every year except in 2008 and 2009 under his watch.
