UN chief warns of many crises facing Earth Workers

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today confirmed that the Earth is facing a three-planet crisis: climate change, loss of biodiversity and pollution.

In his message for International Mother Earth Day, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees pointed out that global issues like these threaten the well-being and survival of millions of people around the world.

He warned that the building blocks for a happy, healthy life – clean water, clean air, stable and predictable climate – are deteriorating and endangering sustainable development goals.

But, according to Guterres, there is still hope: 50 years ago, the Stockholm Conference launched a global environmental campaign, after which it said, “We saw what is possible when we work together.”

The UN Secretary-General stressed that while many environmental challenges have been addressed, there is still much to be done and urgent action is urgently needed.

In this sense, he continued, we must act as soon as possible to avoid climate catastrophe, to control global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, and we are far from the path to achieve it.

Globally, emissions must be reduced by 45 percent by 2030 and carbon neutralized by 2050, the Portuguese ambassador recalled.

He stressed that major emitters should significantly reduce emissions from this year, which means accelerating addiction to fossil fuels.

He stressed the need to accelerate the use of clean renewable energy and invest in adaptation and resilience, especially for the poorest and most vulnerable.

In June, Guterres announced that the world would meet again in Sweden for the Stockholm + 50 meeting, as leaders needed to show greater ambition and take the necessary action to resolve the three-planet emergency.

The President of the United Nations concluded that we have only one Mother Earth and must do everything possible to protect her.

International Mother Earth Day, celebrated every April 22, recognizes a collective responsibility for promoting harmony with nature and for achieving a just balance between the economic, social and environmental needs of present and future generations, according to the 1992 Rio Declaration.
