The president rejected early elections as a solution to the crisis in Peru

The president rejected early elections as a solution to the crisis in Peru

In a televised interview, he denied that the crisis was limited to a confrontation between executive and legislative powers.

“For many years, we have been experiencing a serious and deep political, social and economic crisis, and we have a government that has abandoned its promises of elective change and a Congress that has completely turned its back on its citizens,” he said.

In this context, Mendoza pointed out that the vacuum (removal) of the president or the conduct of elections are not the real solution.

“It’s not about changing the statistics, it’s not about partial reforms or mergers, we need a change in the rules of the game,” he stressed.

The leader, who until recently co-ruled and appointed ministers to executive power, is currently pursuing a critical approach to the Castillo administration.

Nevertheless, this week he backed the government’s plan for a referendum on the fit of a Constituent Assembly demanded by social sectors as part of the demands of recent protests.

At the same time, he warned that the debate on the issue should have citizens as heroes.

“While this very important debate on the new constitution is an issue of concern to all the people of Peru, we must not allow it to be hijacked by the government and Congress,” he said.

He spoke of the social demands that have been exacerbated by the rising tide of international factors to bring them to a more orderly, peaceful and institutional system, but lamented that the rules of the game prevent it, which could lead to a social explosion.

On the other hand, Luis Villanueva, president of the General Confederation of Workers (CGTP), supported the government’s plan for a referendum of the Constituent Assembly to change the state’s structures.

“We need a new constitution, a new political agreement that does not exclude the people from the resources and wealth that will be created in the country,” he added.

He criticized President Pedro Castillo for the opposition’s stubbornness in evacuating and promoting laws in favor of big business, while the government seeks to make changes in favor of the people.
