Expect gale-force northerly winds with high temperatures until Saturday (17/8). Northerly winds will reach 7 to 8 Beaufort in the Aegean and maximum temperatures will reach 40 degrees inland. From Sunday onwards, a gradual weakening of winds, drop in temperature and increase in instability are expected, with occasional storms over the mainland, mainly in mountainous areas.
Fire risk has increased almost across the country
According to the fire risk forecast map published by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection (civilprotection.gov.gr), today (16/8) there is a high and high fire risk in most parts of the country.
In particular, a very high risk of fire (risk category 4) is predicted in the following areas:
Region of Attica including the island of Kythera
Region of Central Greece (Skyros Island including PE Fthiotida, PE Boeotia, PE Evia)
South Aegean Region (Cyclades Regional Units)

For his part, EMY’s director Thodoris Kolitas, in his note on X, notes that the temperature for the next 15 days will be “almost stable above normal levels for the season in Athens and other areas”. 42 degrees Celsius on August 15th
The highest temperature was recorded on Thursday 15/08 by the network of automatic weather stations of Meteo.gr/National Observatory of Athens. As can be seen in the following graph, the highest temperature was recorded in Vrachneika Achaia with 42.1 °C. Additionally, the country’s average maximum temperature was equal to 35.2 °C, while 174 of the 488 active stations (currently) recorded temperatures above 37 °C, of which 30 recorded temperatures above 40 °C.
The weather today
The whole country is expected to be sunny with a few localized clouds. During the warmer part of the day, cloud cover will increase over the continental highlands, and rain or storms will occur, mainly in the central and northern highlands.
Temperatures vary from 15 to 36 degrees in Western Macedonia, from 18 to 36-37 in the rest of Northern Greece, from 20 to 39-41 in Thessaly, from 20 to 38-39 degrees in Epirus, and in the rest of the region. Continental regions 20 to 38-40 and inland 41 degrees, Ionian islands 22 to 36-38 degrees, Aegean islands and Crete 22 to 32-34 degrees, Eastern Aegean islands and southern Crete maximum inland reaching 38 degrees Celsius.
Winds in the Aegean will blow from northerly directions with an intensity of 5-6 and inland at 7 Beaufort. Northwesterly winds with intensity of 3-5 Beaufort in Ionian.
Macedonia, Thrace
Weather: Generally clear. During the afternoon and afternoon, temporary clouds will form and localized rain or isolated storms will occur in the mountains of Macedonia.
Winds: Variable 3 to 4, east northeast 4 to 5 and locally 6 Beaufort in the Thracian.
Temperature: 21 to 36 to 38 degrees and locally 39 to 40 degrees Celsius in Central Macedonia.
Ionian Islands, Epiros, West Styria, West Peloponnese

Temperature: 24 to 39 to 40 degrees and up to 31 degrees Celsius in Sporades.
Thessaloniki
Weather: Generally clear with occasional clouds in the afternoon and afternoon, so local showers may occur in the surrounding mountains.

Initially, there will be temporary cloud formation over northwest and west, central and northern parts by afternoon with localized rain. Scattered storms will occur initially over the Ionian and gradually over the western and northern continental areas, mainly in the afternoon. In the evenings, events will be westbound only.
The rest of the country will have generally clear weather and other continental areas will develop local clouds only in the mid to late afternoon hours.
Winds will be west southwest 3 to 4 Beaufort. 3 to 5 Beaufort from southerly directions in the east and with the same intensity from the eastern Aegean north.
The temperature will drop further.
Forecast for Tuesday 20-08-2024
In the Ionian, clouds with local rain and occasional storms with progress from afternoon mainly in northern areas.
In other parts of the country, the weather will be generally clear, and only in continental areas, temporary clouds will form and mainly in the afternoon and afternoon, with localized rain and scattered storms.
Visibility to the west and south during the morning and evening hours is low at some places.
Winds will change to 3 to 4 and south to west 4 to 5 Beaufort.
The temperature does not change significantly.
