Two months after a redesigned Android logo leaked online – featuring a new version of the classic bugdroid – we’re now seeing the company’s final proposal.
Let’s start with the line, because this is undoubtedly where the goals are most clear. In her article on Blog Highlighting these changes, Google has overlaid its logo with the logo it previously used for Android. Although the actual font is still noticeably different from the font in the standard Google logo, the company is now using a capital A, instead of the lowercase letters we’ve seen in the past.
It’s an attempt to better match the two brands when placed next to each other, giving more weight to the word “Android” than it previously did when it was designed in lowercase, says Jason Fournier, Google’s director of consumer brand management. The message is clear: Android may be open source, but it’s still a Google product, and the apps and services the Mountain View giant offers are just as important as its operating system.
Even though the lowercase “a” is gone, bugdroid isn’t going anywhere. Google last updated its branding four years ago, and in this change, it made everyone’s favorite mobile mascot part of the official logo. We’re happy to announce that bugdroid has survived another update, with the company even describing its bot as “the most popular non-human member of the Android community.” This time, bugdroid leaves its previous 2D level and becomes 3D. Google says this would give the robot more personality in the future, turning the bugdroid into a playful — albeit silent — mascot always connected to Android.
Google says this new look for Android will appear on devices and elsewhere later this year, likely in time for successive new versions of Android 14 and the Pixel 8. Today’s news comes as the company also introduces Drop Drop Quarterly for Android, which includes a new quick utility for all Android smartphones and the ability to add a QR code and barcode to Wallet.
