A waitress at a Michigan restaurant who received a massive $10,000 tip was fired from her job days later, but the restaurant claimed the firing had nothing to do with the generous tip and was a “purely business decision.”
The Mason Jar Cafe in Benton Harbor, located in southern Michigan, fired Lynsey Boyd a week after a customer, who remained anonymous, left the large gift on a $32.43 bill. According to the Detroit Free Press.
The client left the now-viral tip to honor a friend who died and came to town for his funeral. He actually asked Boyd to split the tips among all the employees, which came out to just over $1,100 per employee.
“The dismissal had nothing to do with the tip. He received the full tip, and did not pay taxes on it (as the company did). Yes, he shared the tip at the request of the man who left her,” they wrote on Facebook Owners Able Martinez and Jayme Cousins;
Launched over the phone That Tuesday WSBT-TV reported .
“One week, I was an amazing, hard-working employee and an amazing mother…couldn't have happened to a better person,” Boyd's post reportedly said. “Now, I am unemployed, for the first time since I was 15 years old.”
Restaurant management has since denied the former employee's claims, saying the firing had nothing to do with the tip or the consequences that followed, but also couldn't go into detail due to labor laws.
“We really care about our employees,” the couple added. “We have had the same staff for 5-6 years.” Cousins told WOOD-TV. “We have a staff that has been with us for years, college students who come back every summer and we give opportunities to our staff, so obviously we're not going to let anyone go without a reason.”
The restaurant owners added that they did not take the decision lightly, and that firing an employee is something the restaurant is trying to avoid.
