Kolitas: Change dust for 2 to 4 days
In his post, the director of EMY, Theodoris Kolitas, went into some detail about African dust, among other things, that it lasts 2 to 4 days. As he wrote:
“Dust transport from Africa
- Dust transport to the central Mediterranean is characterized by episodes lasting 2 to 4 days. Central Algeria is the most common source region for suspended particles, with other possible sources being the Hogar Massif and the Tibesti Mountains in northern Chad.
- The world's largest source of dust lies in Chad's Badili Basin, between the ever-shrinking Lake Chad (one-twentieth its 1960 size today) and the Sahara. The crater emits 1.270 million tons of dust a year, ten times more than when measurements began in 1947.
- Overall across the Sahara and its southern border, the Sahel, dust levels have increased 4- to 6-fold since the 1960s. Niger, Chad, Northern Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Mauritania are the most affected countries.
- In spring (March April), the eastward-moving Cyclone Sharaw carries dust along the North African coast into the eastern Mediterranean. A typical sandstorm with a range of 200 kilometers carries 20 to 30 million tons of dust, sometimes up to 100 million. Globally, atmospheric dust reaches 2 to 3 billion tons per year.
