The contract to buy Rafale’s Spike missiles from the Hellenic Armed Forces (of which it is a subsidiary) includes “dozens” of unmanned Orbiter 3s, as the manufacturer Israeli Aeronautics announced. The latter is the key link. The chain of deployment of missiles, especially Spike NLOS, requires targeting systems capable of detecting distant targets, which are beyond long range.
Both Orbiter 3 and Spike are linked by the “Fire Weaver” combat management and intelligence system.
Orbiter 3 is a small unmanned vehicle with a gross weight of 32 kg, a spread of 4.4 meters and a length of 1.2. It flies with an electric motor and can fly for 6 hours at a maximum speed of 70 knots. It has a payload of 5.5 kg, a sensor complex with a day-night camera and a laser pointer. The drone is launched using a catapult while landing using a parachute. It can communicate with its control base up to 50 km away, even when flying in difficult weather and GPS interference environments.
