The girlfriend of a missing retired California police officer accuses Greek authorities of doing too little to find him, forcing his relatives to rush their own rescue mission to Greece.
“I am absolutely disgusted with the way we have been treated”, Debbie Lechon told The Post. Former Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Albert Calibet, 59, went missing while hiking on Amorgos Island last Tuesday.
“Albert has been on the lifeguard since he was 25. All are worth seeking out. But he really deserves it, honestly.” said Debbie Lechon at Amorgos.
The woman traveled with him to Greece for 32 hours His brother Oliver and two members of the Los Angeles County Search and Rescue Team.
Along with three local friends and family members, they form their own search party and scour the mountains every minute to find him.
“Actually, we got alder in our shoes. It’s ridiculous, it’s the seventh day, and we’re not panicking now.”said the companion of the missing man.
Debbie Lechon said she was shocked by the minimal efforts made by local authorities to find the 59-year-old. He said he flew a helicopter over the area for just two hours the day after he disappeared. Promises to use drones, sniffer dogs And helicopter searches were fruitless, he complained.
In fact, the woman and her brother say they were willing to pay for helicopters and search dogs to participate in the investigation, but their requests were rejected by Greek authorities. The search dogs “could have already saved his life,” Lechan said.
The couple’s friends begin their search at 5 a.m. each day and finalize strategies for the next search-and-rescue hike late at night. As he said, Greek officials don’t seem to work after sunset.
Their attitude”Let’s go to bed and let Albert sleep out. The girl explained. The 59-year-old, an experienced mountaineer with dual citizenship in Greece, went hiking around 7 a.m. on Tuesday and did not reach his destination as expected four hours later, according to the Greek Correspondent website.
His last known correspondence is a text from a road sign to his sister. Albert Calibet was about to start his journey when he made a phone call to his partner. She knew something was wrong when she woke up the next morning and still didn’t respond to her messages. Debbie Lechon The 59-year-old said he tried to ask authorities for his cell phone records to see if he had made any other attempts to contact him, but was told it was illegal to search his phone’s location records.
At the same time, he accused the US embassy in Athens of not yet helping to organize an “aggressive” investigation. “America dropped the ball, too,” Debbie Lechon said.
Still, seven days later, investigators are still searching for the 59-year-old and trying to find their loved one. “I’ll be here until they find the love of my life”Debbie Lechon said.
