An emergency update from Nvidia for PCs with older graphics cards

emergency Firmware update has been released before nvidia for users who have it older graphics cards on their computers and in particular Pre-RTX era models.

In particular, there have been reports of issues from quite a few users with GeForce 10, GeForce 900 and GeForce 700 GPUs if the monitor is connected via DisplayPort 1.3 or DisplayPort 1.4. In fact, not only were users seeing black screens, but there were also reports of systems not booting, with the graphics card completely blocking the boot process.

Wanting to rectify the situation, Nvidia has released the “NVIDIA Graphics Firmware Update Tool for DisplayPort 1.3 and 1.4”which detects if the graphics card really needs a firmware update and updates it.

For users who cannot unlock their PC at all, the company recommends the following steps:

  • Boot with DVI or HDMI
  • Boot using a different screen
  • change the boot mode from UEFI to Legacy; or UEFI legacy.
  • Boot with an alternate graphics source (secondary or integrated graphics card)
