Mr. Samaras, in his new intervention through his allies, sends a new “message” and chooses to respond by citing the statement of the government representative three months ago.
Former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has not backed down from his initial stance on an amendment to reduce the time it takes immigrants from third countries to apply for a legal residence permit in Greece.
Mr. Samaras, in his new intervention through his allies, sends a new “message” and chooses to respond by citing the statement of the government representative three months ago, specifically on September 29, 2023, during the Conference of Political Teachers. Mr. Marinakis promised that there would be no Hellenizations.
In particular, the following are mentioned:
Journalist: My question is about the Greekization of immigrants. Mr. There was some confusion over some of Kyrides’ statements. What applies; From what I saw yesterday you denied it. I would like to give an official answer here as well. Secondly, Mr. If Kyritis still holds the trust of the government and the prime minister.
B. Marinakis (Government Representative): Thanks for the question. Let’s say that from the official conference of political teachers here in Thessaloniki. The government had no intention of Greekization or legalization. I hope some media can’t be malicious because there has been a misunderstanding again. No such intention, no such plan, no such broad planning by the government.”
First Samara intervention
The former prime minister yesterday expressed his strong displeasure with the amendment, calling it a “clearly misguided amendment on illegal immigrants” and called on the government to withdraw the amendment. “With this amendment our country is, in essence, becoming a beacon of attraction for illegal immigrants,” asserted the former prime minister.
Detailed announcement by Antonis Samaras:
The surprise filing of an amendment providing for “a new type of residence permit for third-country nationals to work” was false. In effect, it legalizes all illegal immigrants who have been in Greece for 3 years! Indeed, without substantial verification of everyone’s identity by the government, the arrest! This is at a time when immigration will shock the whole of Europe expecting a tougher policy!
I cannot understand why our government is making the ability to grant residency and work permits to illegal immigrants even more flexible. Even for rejected asylum applications! Even if they have a passport, “even if it’s expired”… and granting permission becomes mandatory, not discretionary with the authorities as is the case today.
Let me remind you that in 2012-2014 our government established a legal framework, under very strict conditions, applicants will be granted a residence permit only if they have been continuously present in the country for 7 years. SYRIZA also retained this regime.
Our country, with this amendment, becomes, in essence, a beacon of attraction for illegal immigrants. The need to solve the labor problem can be done through indigenous skills. Immigrants return to their countries of course with legal immigration and transnational contracts for a specific period of time. And to ask that the solution to the population problem is to legalize illegal immigrants is completely false! Greece is a country, not a place! I request the government to withdraw this amendment and reconsider the whole issue.
