Artificial Intelligence: Google’s search engine made Obama… a Muslim

Google has launched AI Overview, a search engine that uses artificial intelligence to help users find what they’re looking for, but its start isn’t ideal at all. Instead, the artificial intelligence made serious mistakes, sparking criticism from Internet users after it made former US President Barack Obama a Muslim, as reported by CNBC.

AI Overview displays a quick summary of answers to your search questions at the top of your Google search. For example, if a user searches for the best way to clean leather shoes, the results page can display an AI-powered overview at the top through the process of collecting and synthesizing information from around the web.

When asked how many Muslim presidents there are in the United States, Amnesty International responded: “The United States has had one Muslim president, Barack Hussein Obama.”

When one user searched for “non-stick cheese on pizza,” the feature suggested adding “about 1/8 cup of non-toxic glue to the sauce.” Social media users found an 11-year-old comment on Reddit that appears to be the source.

When asked “How many rocks should I eat each day,” the tool responded, “According to UC Berkeley geologists, humans should eat at least one small rock a day,” and went on to list the vitamins and digestive benefits.

The tool can also inaccurately answer simple questions, such as making a list of fruits ending in “um” or saying that 1919 was… 20 years ago.

In an ironic twist, when asked whether Google was violating US law, Amnesty International responded: “Yes, the US Department of Justice and 11 states are suing Google for antitrust violations.”

What does Google answer?

On the day Google gave an overview of AI at its annual Google I/O event, the company said it also plans to offer Assistant-like features directly in search. He explained that users will be able to search for something like: “Create an easy-to-prepare 3-day meal plan” and get a starting point with a wide range of recipes from around the web.

“The vast majority of AI Overview results provide high-quality information, with links to further online research,” a Google spokesperson told CNBC. “Many of the examples we saw involved unusual queries, and we also saw examples that were fake or we couldn’t replicate them.”

The spokesperson said that AI Overview underwent extensive testing before its release and that the company is taking “immediate action, where necessary, in accordance with our content policies.”
