This is expected to create a major problem as it is estimated that 1 billion computers worldwide will not be able to upgrade to Windows 11 due to the stringent hardware requirements set by Microsoft. This means that in 2025, millions of computers will be running an unsupported operating system, including critical security updates.
To avoid this scenario, the nonprofit Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) sent a signed letter Request from 20,000 people to Microsoft, asking it to extend support for Windows 10 beyond 2025. PIRG argues that abandoning Windows 10 will cause more PCs to become obsolete than any other action in the past.
For example, Windows XP was supported for 13 years before support was discontinued. Additionally, Windows 10 was originally released with greater compatibility with older PCs running Windows 7 and 8.1 to make upgrading easier. So Microsoft’s decision to force a move to Windows 11 is “surprising and problematic,” according to PIRG.
Microsoft’s decision is not only bad for consumers who will be left with useless computers, it is also bad for the environment. Hundreds of millions of old PCs that cannot be upgraded to Windows 11 will end up in landfills, adding significantly to the already massive amounts of electronic waste around the world.
Microsoft has not yet responded to PIRG’s request. However, there are rumors that the company is already preparing Windows 12 which is expected to be released in 2024, just one year before support for Windows 10 ends. This move shows that Microsoft is planning to quickly “push” users to newer versions of Windows 10. Windows, despite the fact that millions of computers will not be able to upgrade.
