ASUS's new ROG Zephyrus G14 and G16 (2024) gaming laptops are stylish and more economical – Asus

ROG Zephyrus G14 and G16 laptops can “run” the latest generation games with high graphics quality, but unlike other “gaming” applications, they follow a more professional and “toned” design.

In both cases we are dealing with aluminum bodies (steel on the lid), with a clean, unnecessary design that is thin and lighter compared to the company's previous generation models. Thus, it has a cleaner look that “screams” premium, with ASUS managing to fit particularly well into a 14-inch case, and all modern storage spaces. The only detail that attests to… the “extreme” interior design is the notch in the lid that lights up in off-white with ASUS preferring – at least in this generation – to move away from RGB (although it is not present on… the keyboard). Thanks to the new design, ASUS has been able to utilize more surface area for the keyboard and touchpad.

In terms of displays, both the ROG Zephyrus G14 laptop and its bigger sibling, the ROG Zephyrus G16, feature ROG Nebula OLED (16:10) displays. The first has a 14-inch 3K screen with a resolution of 2880 x 1800 pixels and a refresh rate of 120 Hz, while the second has a 16-inch screen with a 2.5K resolution with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels and a refresh rate of 240 Hz. Both displays are manufactured by Samsung Display and cover 100% of the DCI-P3 color space. It also supports NVIDIA G-SYNC and Dolby Vision and is VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certified.

One of the main differences between them is that the ROG Zephyrus G14 laptop is equipped with AMD Ryzen 8000 series processors (up to the Ryzen 9 8940HS model) while the ROG Zephyrus G16 is equipped with Intel Core Ultra processors (up to the Intel Core Ultra 9 185H model). In terms of graphics, the ROG Zephyrus G14 can be equipped with up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 (90W) while the ROG Zephyrus G16 can be equipped with up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 (115W). Otherwise, both devices can accept up to 32GB of LPDDR5x memory (6400MHz on the G14 and 7467MHz on the G16) and up to 1TB (G14) or 4TB (G16) PCIe 4.0 SSDs. As for cooling, in the case of the ROG Zephyrus G14, the company uses a cooling system equipped with fiber and mesh heat pipes and three fans, while in the case of the ROG Zephyrus G16 it uses a vapor chamber with two second-generation Arc Flow fans. The G14 weighs about 1.5kg while the G16 weighs 1.85kg. This means that unlike other gaming laptops, it is lighter and easier to transport.

In terms of connectivity, the two new ASUS computers have similar hardware with the difference that the larger one has a slot for SD memory cards and the smaller one for microSD memory cards. More specifically, they have 1x USB Type-C (USB4 on the G14 and Thunderbolt 4 on the G16), 1x USB Type-C 3.2 Gen 2, 2x USB Type-A 3.2 Gen 2, 1x HDMI 2.1 out and 1x 3.5mm headphone jack. In terms of wireless networking and connectivity, there is WiFi 6E and Bluetooth v5.3. There are also multiple speakers (six, with four tweeters and two tweeters) with Dolby Atmos support as well as an RGB illuminated keyboard. The battery capacity in the case of the ROG Zephyrus G14 is 73Wh, while its capacity in the case of the ROG Zephyrus G16 is 90Wh. To charge it, ASUS uses its own connector and comes with a 180W charger. The new ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 and ROG Zephyrus G16 laptops will be released in the first quarter of the year, but the company has not yet announced their prices.
