The Athens Municipal Council unanimously decided to give the “green light” to the immediate sealing of 10 catering companies.

Vassilios Koromantsos, Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Police and Public Areas, recommended closing the shops for a few days, pointing out that this possibility is currently provided by the law on arbitrary occupation of public space. The municipality has the right to double the fine or seal the shop for one to five days.

A message to criminals

“Henceforth this measure will be used. Today we choose as the first message, until everyone is informed, the closure should not last more than three days. Let those who still violate the law get the message. We will continue to monitor the arbitrary occupation, because in this way we will also protect the public space, but entrepreneurs who want to act legally, arbitrary and protect against unfair competition resulting from the encroachment of excessive public space.”

Mr. Koromantsos announced that similar decisions would be taken at the next meeting of the City Council.
