Japan’s Koji Yakusu, one of the country’s most popular actors, won Best Actor for his performance in Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days at the 76th Cannes Film Festival this evening.
“I would like to give special thanks to Wim Wenders and co-writer. You have created an amazing character,” he said enthusiastically as he accepted his award.

In this film by the director of the film Paris, Texas (Phoenix House, 1984), Koji Yakusu plays Hirayama, a Tokyo public toilet employee, a silent, lonely man who slowly opens up to others.
Turkala Merve Duzdar won the Best Actress Award at the 76th Cannes Film Festival this evening for her performance in Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Dry Grass.

Jonathan Glazer also took home the Grand Prix for his movie, The Zone of Interest.
The Grand Prix is awarded to the second best film at the festival.
France’s Justine Trier won the Palme d’Or at Anatomy of a Fall, becoming the third female director to win the award in its history.
The 44-year-old director succeeds Jane Campion (The Piano Lesson, 1993) and Julia DuCorneau (Titan, 2021), underlining the slow step towards equality in a film industry historically dominated by men.
