Apple has restricted the use of ChatGPT and other third-party AI tools to its employees as it develops similar technology of its own, according to a document cited by Wall Street Journal.
According to the report, Apple management fears that the use of chatbots and artificial intelligence platforms may lead to the leakage of confidential data. Therefore, employees were asked to stop using these systems.
On Thursday, OpenAI announced ChatGPT for iPhone and iPad.

Why this decision?
According to the document, Apple is concerned that employees who use such software could share confidential data. The document also said that Apple required its employees not to use Microsoft’s proprietary Kopilot software, which automates writing software code.
Created by Microsoft-powered OpenAI, ChatGPT is a chatbot derived from the so-called large language model that is capable of answering questions, writing reports, and performing other tasks in a way that resembles someone’s work.
Apple’s AI efforts are led by John Gianandrea, whom Apple hired from Google in 2018. Under the leadership of Gianandrea, Apple’s senior vice president who reports to CEO Tim Cook, Apple has acquired a number of AI startups.
In Apple’s latest quarterly earnings report, Tim Cook expressed some concerns about developments in genetic artificial intelligence. “I think it’s very important to be careful how we approach these things,” he said. “And there are a number of issues that need to be resolved, as discussed in various places, but the possibilities are certainly very interesting.”
