A few hours ago CD Project Red Announce it Cyberpunk 2077: Definitive Edition. As the name suggests, this is the definitive edition of the open-world RPG, which will include the base game with all the updates released so far, as well as the large Phantom Liberty expansion pack.
However, shortly after the official announcement, many players were quick to point out that the new version is not…“absolute”, since the expansion will not be present on the retail package disc. On the contrary, the package will include a coupon for the download, with all that entails for the historical preservation of this content, because in practice it means that it will never exist in physical form, at least for all platforms.
This sparked strong reactions from collectors, retail gaming enthusiasts, and prominent social media accounts concerned with the historic preservation of gaming experiences. In fact, it took such proportions that CD Projekt had to provide explanations.
Specifically, the company’s global community manager, Marcin Momot, responded to the complaints, explaining the reasoning behind the decision. In more detail, through his personal account on the X website (formerly Twitter), he wrote:
To be clear, Phantom Liberty is on disc on Xbox. The code is included on PS5 and a download is available on PC.
The difference in how Phantom Liberty is included in the final release is due to the technical requirements that apply to each platform.
