“The best protection is preparation, prevention, information,” notes seismology professor Gerasimos Papadopoulos.
Seismology professor Gerasimos Papadopoulos is ringing the “bell” of danger with his post on social media that Greece has not experienced any earthquakes larger than the 6-magnitude one in Arkalochori in November 2021.
Mr. As Papadopoulos notes, “seismic asphyxiation continues in the country,” with four earthquakes of magnitude 5.5 to 5.9 and smaller, as he pointed out.
“According to the long-term data, we expected 2 earthquakes of M=6 and above and 8 earthquakes of M=5.5 to 5.9,” the professor added, adding, “We are passing through a seismic recession. In the two years 2020-2021, M=6 or above. There were 6 strong earthquakes, which is 3 times more than predicted by average statistics”.
“We don’t know when the next strong earthquake will occur,” notes Gerasimos Papatopoulos, and underlines that “compliance with regulations, pre-earthquake inspection of buildings, preparation, prevention, information are the best defenses.”
Post in detail
“Country’s seismic suffocation continues! I have reiterated that since November 2021 not a single strong earthquake of magnitude M=6 or above has occurred. Only 4 earthquakes of magnitude M=5.5 to 5.9 and smaller have occurred. From long-term statistics, M=6 and above We expect 2 earthquakes above and 8 earthquakes from M=5.5 to 5.9.
With 6 strong earthquakes of M=6 or greater occurring in the two years 2020-2021, that is 3 times the average statistical forecast, we are going through an earthquake recession.
It is not known when the next strong earthquake will occur. Adherence to best safety practices, pre-earthquake inspection of buildings, preparation, prevention, information.”
